The Door County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday released the name of the man who died in the Door County Jail last week. He was Sturgeon Bay resident Michael J. Savage.

Savage, 54, was found unresponsive in his cell Thursday night, the Sheriff’s Office said Friday. His name had not been released as the Sheriff’s Office notified his family.

The Dane County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy Monday, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release Tuesday. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending, according to the release.

The investigation into the incident being conducted by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office is underway, Door County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Patrick McCarty said Monday. The Brown County Sheriff’s Office already has collected all information related to the incident, McCarty said, including reports, jail videos and jail logs.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office will produce a report at the conclusion of its investigation, McCarty said. That report will be reviewed by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, he said.
