Door County’s public spaces, libraries, schools, roads, tourism and finances all hinge on the daily operations of local government. Local government includes two main avenues: county governments and municipal governments. Each of these branches has its own responsibilities and answers to the people within its boundaries.

Systems such as public health and justice and safety are largely operated at the county level. In Door County, this includes the sheriff’s department, for example. The purposes of different types of local governments are explained earlier in this series. 

For issues in your town, village or city, municipal governments are the place to turn. Each municipality has different powers and offers different services depending on whether it is a town, village or city. To help consolidate these resources, Knock has compiled information about each of Door County’s 19 municipalities and the county Board of Supervisors. In this guide, you can find contact information and monthly meeting details for each municipality and the county.

How to participate in public comment

Municipal and county meetings often provide time for public comment, although they are not legally required to do so in Wisconsin.  Municipalities may vary on their guidelines for public comment. Specific regulations will be read out at the beginning of each meeting. Typically, the comment period is limited to 30 minutes total. Each speaker is usually allowed three minutes, and priority is given to speakers who attend in person. Comments must be relevant to the agenda and are expected to be delivered with order and decorum.
